Michael Vick to Adopt a New Dog? Not So Fast!

It's true. We don't think Michael Vick would make a good doggie parent. The NFL superstar recently claimed on Piers Morgan Tonight that he's interested in getting a dog. Call us crazy, but we don't think it's a good idea. Far from it.

Despite spending 19 months in prison for running an illegal interstate dog fighting business, Vick hasn't expressed a shred of empathy toward the dogs he brutalized and killed. And rather than talk about the horrors of dog fighting, he has consistently chosen to focus on the consequences of getting caught.

In a nutshell, his actions are self-serving. We've seen little remorse and even less compassion. And let's not forget, he caused unspeakable suffering to hundreds of innocent dogs. Frankly, the ASPCA has serious concerns about Vick's ability to be a responsible pet parent.

Any reputable adoption agency or rescue will laugh at Vick if he tries adopting a dog... Only way he will be able to is if he lies when he fills out the paper work... As soon as they read his name (because alot don't know his face)they will show him the door... I would hope they would anyway...

Some of you are writing comments that actually make sense so I'm not talking to you, but some of YOU may need more help than Vick! So we should shoot him now??? Wait - He killed dogs, so we should kill him (a human being)...yeah, that makes sense!#%?! Some PEOPLE who kill PEOPLE don't get sentenced to die. Get a reality check people...did you see the news this morning? There are real people getting killed. No, I do not feel Mr. Vick should own a pet at this time. I am all about forgiveness, and despite my original concerns, I understand that the HSUS decision to allow him to speak to kids about the horrors of dogfighting can make a difference to kids who would be far more likely to listen to him than Mr. Pacelle. Therefore I can agree with that. However, I do not think Mr. Vick needs to own a pet at this time. I also agree that many of his public statements have been vague at best when the subject of remorse comes up.

If he wanted a companion he should have not used his animals to fight with the first time. He does not deserve a second chance at owning a dog. Here is a list of pets I think are fair enough for him to own: Ants and sea monkeys. That's it. Not even fish. I think it's fine to have his family own pets. But not him.

NO! He should not be allowed to adopt a dog. In fact, he should not EVER be able to have an animal in his care at any time. He has no remorse for his awful behavior and even if he had regular visits from an animal control officer, there are many things that he can do to harm an animal when no one is around. The point is, he does not appreciate the companionship and love that a pet can provide. He views dogs as disposable objects because they are not human and so should never be allowed the privilege of caring for any. He lacks the ability to care......

I think he knows he is talented and he is bored. He doesn't care and enjoys upsetting people. That is his motivation. His talent made things easy and therefore he is contemtuous of everyone else. Brilliant idea! Afterthey are finished getting the Vick family a dog to help change his "perspective on dogs", perhaps someone can help the "reformed" child molestors jobs in elementary schools so they can see that children are not meant to be raped and tortured. What is wrong with this world? Not for nothing, but if Vick's kid wants a dog, she is going to be an adult someday and then she can have a dog if she wants one. How old is this kid anyway? And why should she have one? Because every family should have a dog therefore portraying them as "novelties" hence the reason why so many are dumped in the shelter. Most young children do not care for their pets anyway, the parents do, so who do you think is going to be taking care of this dog? Get the kid horse back riding lessons or something or let her volunteer at a shelter. Teach her how to respect animals bc I can guarantee that is NOT part of her upbringing obviously.

I just accepted a job offer in Northern VA. and I am having an extremely hard time finding a place to rent because the dog I rescued from cruel people like Vick, has some pit in her. No, I don't think he needs a new dog. I have been harassed about having a half english bull terrier and half blue nose pitbul in the trailerpark I live in. The owners are trying to ban all pitbul breeds and I'm sure the publicity he brought contributed to the negativity. How much money has he DONATED TO LOCAL SHELTERS IN CALIFORINA OR ASPCA to help remedy the need to prevent animal cruelty??? I am a grant writer and I have not found any foundation by Michael Vick as a resource to GIVE BACK TO THE ANIMAL KINGDOM. The lives he destroyed and tormented as his PACK LEADER mentality brought him a fortune and his pack of animal cruelty followers of blood, death, and misery for the animals from bait animals to champion fighters who were humanely put down still have underground circuitries. And my Oden has been restricted to inside my doublewide trailer and yard because of his bloodline. I have no advocate to help me therefor I have been searching and I challenge Vick instead of getting a new dog how about starting a grant foundation to give back to help legal issues like mine!!!!! I rescued Oden at 7weeks old but the manager told me 9 months later he is afraid of pitbuls and oden is only 1/2 pit.

Surely Michael Vick should have been forbidden the privilege of dog guardianship for an indefinite period as part of his sentencing. Was he not? Given the lack of expressed remorse on his part, I think it would be irresponsible in the extreme to subject a dog to his control--any more than to adopt a child to a known serial child abuser. It would be putting the dog at great risk, which should not happen. I agree with those that call for supervision should it happen--and I do believe that people can grow and change. But in the absence of evidence that he has, it would certainly be wrong to allow a dog to be subjected to the potential danger.

There is a dog breeder, Hallmark Kennels in Yorktown Tx, whose Minature Schnauzers are so sick and matted from lack of care they can hardly eat, we got one dog from her that was nearly dead, we had to shave him completly and his ribs and spine was prodruding it was sicking. Now the kennel is out in the country and so no law inforcement here feels the need to make the trip to check. Why is there not AKC inforcers checking on these breeders when they are regestered through AKC.

Very simple, owning a dog(s) is a privilege not necessarily a right. A man who would beat, drown, electrocute and force fights between dogs has given up any right to own another dog. I absolutely do NOT think he should be able to adopt ANY pet. Ever since the story came out about him running illegal dogfights, I have been sickened by him and everyone involved. There has been no remorse or compassion from him toward the animals he harmed, tortured and killed. The only thing he regrets is getting caught!
