Heat Wave! Should You Shave Your Pet?

Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 11:45am

Nearly everywhere in America, this summer is a scorcher, and we know that as a responsible pet parent, you want to do everything you can to keep your best four-legged friends cool. So when you look at your Pomeranian, Golden Retriever or long-haired cat wearing a thick, fluffy coat, you might feel tempted to break out your grooming tools and give him a serious hair cut.

But hold those clippers! While you or I would hate to sport a fur coat in 100-degree weather, your pets’ fur coats are actually providing them with heat relief.

“A dog’s coat is kind of like insulation for your house,” explains Dr. Louise Murray, Vice President of ASPCA Bergh Memorial Hospital. “Insulation stops your home from getting too cold in winter, but it also keeps it from overheating in summer—and your dog’s coat does the same thing.”

Dogs’ coats have several layers, and these layers are essential to your dog’s comfort in the heat. Robbing your dog of this natural cooling system can lead to discomfort and overheating. And keeping your dog cool isn’t the only reason to leave his coat intact, Dr. Murray warns. Your dog’s coat prevents your pup from getting sunburn and helps protect her from skin cancer.

So what can you do? “It’s OK to trim your long-haired dog’s long hair, such as any hair that hangs down on his legs,” Dr. Murray says. Just never attempt to clip mats off your pet’s coat with scissors, Dr. Murray adds. And if you’ve got a long-haired kitty, leave her coat intact. Instead, brush her a little more frequently during the hot summer months.

To protect your pet from sunburn and skin cancer, save longer walks for evenings, and consider applying pet-specific sun block to thinly covered areas like the bridge of your dog’s nose, the tips of his ears and his belly, Dr. Murray suggests, noting that pets with thin coats, as well as those with white or light-colored coats, are especially at risk for sun damage.

Of course, pet parents should remember to keep pets inside with plenty of water during hot days—hydration is key! For more important information on summer pet care, visit our Hot-Weather Tips.

That is not an objective source you cite. http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Climate_Depot

Let's talk about dogs! NOT theories!

While global warming may be in fact a concern to those of us who inhabit this planet, I agree with Phyllis. Isn't this board supposed to be about shaving dogs?

This was about heat, dogs, breeds, to shave or not to shave, not global warming. I agree with you 100%. Thank you!

You are so right! This is a forum about our animals! If you want to discuss global wamring/climate change, start your own forum!!!

Coldest winters for last 5 years and all the (al gore cabon tax machine), warming data is fudged,,, admitted fraud !!!! NO gobal warming at all!!!

Colder winters are part of the climate change. The balance of our weather patterns has been altered dramatically. Why are you arguing when it is obvious that our climate is changing in dangerous ways? You do not see the increase in violent storms? You don't make any connections in your mind between these things? Luckily we have more intelligent people who are experts who may inform us about what is really going on instead of superstitious folks who have their heads up their asses. When we have absolute dust bowl conditions and no food crops can be grown will you finally be able to see just how different our weather really is? I didn't think so....

The ones who disagree are on the payroll of some mighty influential groups/organizations. The voice of reason and evidence does not exist for them.

IDIOTS. Stop talking about global warming...this is about dogs. ALSO. Although many agree global warming/climate change/ global chaos (or whatever new label you want to give it because it doesn't fit your definition) might exist in some way, They have NO IDEA what causes it and the idea that HUMANS cause it is completely HYPOTHESIS with absolutely no proof or any way of getting proof. This is stupid and a waste of our time. MAN DOESN"T AFFECT THE WEATHER or CLIMATE. IF it is going to warm up, it will regardless of what we do. SO....forget about it and move on! Darn I can't stand this idiotic talk!

Do you watch Fox News to get your information on Global "Cooling"? You are sadly misinformed: Global Warming is a reality. Domestic animals and wildlife are well aware of this, but unfortunately, flat earth science and their followers believe otherwise.

You overstate. A minority of climatologists - a very small minority - don't "believe" in global warming. The rest do based on scientific studies including the studies done at Hawaii. The only real question is whether or not this is a man-made trend (as the rapid increase in change suggests) or a natural trend as has happened in the past. Although warming trends have happened, there is no evidence that one has ever happened as quickly as the present one. My springer spaniel blows all the time, losing her undercoat and regrowing it year round but she also goes through 2 really big sheddings a year. It never occurred to me to shave her, it seems like she's regulating her temperature all by herself.

Most of the worlds scientists use scientific methods, not belief or political opinion have established that global warming or climate imbalance is indeed a reality and that our carbon emitting contributions indeed have an impact on the steadily rising temperatures of the ocean and the receding of the polar ice. The petroleum industry which stand to lose the most, because it is a principal contributor to this has been spending or investing a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ not in counteracting the effects as much as public opinion. This campaign is obviously successful in its goal but is doing nothing to rectify the problem. Even those who pooh poohed it in the past recognize the reality now, but are blaming it on natural cycles. Talk about PC, that is PC of the oil industry. The very same ill-logic which inspired late President Reagan to paint the passive solar panels Carter placed on the roof from black to white (to look better) and former Pres. George Bush sr to remove altogether because he feared it would insult his oily friends (and it probably didn't work well painted white anyways). It lay in the celler till installed on the roof of a college in Maine, painted back to black and heats the water in the dormitories. Really? Really!

Sharing my pet peeve here. I dislike the term PC. What in the world does it mean anyway? When applied to a comedian, let's say, as in "he's not PC" and usually said with admiration, it means he spouts racist anti woman and/or anti gay rhetoric or has a potty mouth. He uses lots of dirty words and is a nasty guy, in other words, a grown up version of the school yard bully. "The current PC notion of global warming...", what does that mean? I think people are going to have strong feelings about something that they believe could be the end of the world. It has nothing to do with being politics. It's akin to living in 1935 and having strong feelings about Adolf Hitler. My verdict: it's an overdone word and intellectually lazy, as well. Oh, and I did shave my furry black Persian mix and he couldn't be happier. His outdoor visits are brief, so no chance of sunburn.

Get your head out of the sand.

Thank u for posting what u did.We also shave our dogs in the summer time.St.bernard,and a sheppard/wolf,and THEY LOVED IT.jUST GOTTA LEAVE ENOUGH FOR THE MISQUITOS, I since strongly dis-agree w/this article.Everyone thought the world was flat too for centuries, guess what they were wrong..Shave em,,they will love it,,jmo mary

I too have a Saint and she is so much more comfortably when shaved (#10 blade). She is a Florida saint and the hair grows back within 2-3 weeks. Sleeps better, no panting, no scratching.

I have a Lhasa Apso. Hearing about not cutting hair I didn't the first few years of his life. Then I cut it not shaved it. I always leave his undercoat and a little overcoat. There is no doubt that he is much happier. His hair grows back almost too soon. In the Winter I just trim the very long parts and leave it full. I do an awful lot of brushing and combing though.

A Lhasa is not a double coated breed so this article is not really referring to them.

as a groomer and pet owner and vet tech i think i speak w/ some knowledge. Nature gave pets the coats they have for a reason - in winter they grow one, when it gets warm/hot they shed it. What's left is what they need to stay cool. If they were meant to have close cropped coats, I think they'd be that way naturally!! It's people who think they need to be shaved to be cooler when in reality the animal is left open to heatstroke and skin cancer!! Just like people!! Just brush & comb the coat (this where owners get lazy) or use one of those "furminator" things.....DON'T SHAVE THE ANIMAL!!

While some people feel a dog will be okay unshaved, don't forget that some cold-weather breeds like St. Bernards, Huskies, Chows, etc. are living in hot, humid areas and for them going nekkid is a blessing.

If I were living in the high tebetian mountains, were lhasas came from, I would agree. But, my guy is a San Diego dog.

Oh, I wish I would have known this before. 2 days ago I just shaved my foster yorkie. I thought I was doing a good thing. Do you know how long it will take to grow back?

Dog coats are meant for a reason. I agree and disagree with shaving. One: I have two little long haired ones...they are much happier being shaved when it's hot. They become more playful and just more joyous. But mine are indoor babies only, daily out side spree on large private grounds. Maybe it is a personal issue w/dogs too. Two: Dog breeds come from all over the world. In the parts of the country that they originated, yes...there were designed to be coated as they are. The breed also is intended for such purposes; i.g. retreivers, hounds and so forth. But we have breeds living all over; not acclimated but perhaps acclimated over time as well. WE as owners need to use our common sense and protect them from mosquitos, ticks, sunburn, etc. And speak up for those who have owners unaware or not thinking. Again, my two babies are much happier. But I completely understand the logic of not shaving.

as a former pet groomer for 40 years, I would not shave a dog whose coat was not intended to be shaved. I had a woman request her yellow lab be shaved because it was shedding. I offered to brush out all of the dead hair but would not shave the dog. The lady was upset but I turned her away efore I would ruin her dogs coat. As stated here, they have the coats they evolved with and some such as labs, poms, chows and shepherds coats do not grow back correctly and never quite look how they should. If you don't want to brush your dog either take it regularly to a groomer or get a hairless breed. Brushing goes with responsible ownership so your pet is healthy and happy and looks like it was intended to.

Dogs that live indoors shed constantly because shedding in the wild is dictated by daylight hours. Dogs that live indoors are subjected to artificial light all year round so they will shed all year. This is completely normal. Listen to the experts about not clipping. That is why they are the experts.

Global Warming???? Oh Lord

Unless you are having him bathed and blow out by a professional groomer he is going to appear to be shedding all year round. Dirty coats have a hard time releasing dead fur all at once like they are supposed to. So they release clumps when they become too heavy and gravity just pulls them out. His skin will be fine but the texture of his coat will have changed from all the shaving and you can't reverse that. But if you like a natural coat on a thick double coated dog have them professionally groomed 3-4 times a year minimum and you won't see very much shedding. Having them groomed 6-8 times a year will eliminate almost all fur shedding.

Enjoyed the live streaming of the OU scrimmage yesterday before football game. Typically sloppy this time of year but lot of talent.

Greetings, I do think your blog may be having browser compatibility issues. Whenever I look at your blog in Safari, it looks fine however when opening in Internet Explorer, it's got some overlapping issues. I simply wanted to provide you with a quick heads up! Besides that, fantastic website!

This is the only time I've been to your website. Thnx for posting more details.

I'm no longer certain where you are getting your info, but good topic. I needs to spend a while finding out more or understanding more. Thank you for great information I was looking for this info for my mission.

certainly like your web-site however you need to test the spelling on several of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling issues and I in finding it very troublesome to inform the reality then again I'll surely come back again.

For the first time in her 6 years, we clipped our Corgi this summer. Her brother (a Cocker) has always gotten regular clipping, pretty short in summer and heavier in winter, but we believed the theory of leaving a dog's insulation untouched. Wrong! She can enjoy walks now (morning, and we carry water). I agree with Christina that you have to take the breed and climate into consideration. In a hot and humid summer, it's cruel to leave a dog in a thick, long coat. Would you wear your thick wool coat? Sure we need sun protection, but we don't wear blankets. We've donated regularly to ASPCA for 30 years. I'm disappointed to see you spreading this thoughtless misinformation.

Who are you to say this information is wrong. Vet? Groomer? Doubt it.

Who says you have to believe one person that says don't cut your dogs hair I have been shaving my dogs for years and can definitely say their behavior changes when they come home they are jumping around and playing and prancing more than before. While there may be some validity to pertaining to outside dogs I would definitely think you go by how your dog feels.

I agree! We have been clipping/shaving our golden for years and she LOVES IT..she is a new dog each time we get her done, prancing playing and acting like a puppy again.Plus she no longer gets nasty hot spots

We clip not shave.just want to clear thatup

Trust me, I have both a golden and the ultimate double-coated dog.........a Sheltie/Chow!

We have a golden boy too and I've always been told he has two coats. We live in Texas and last summer we had a terrible heat wave, worse than usual! We had him clipped but we didn't notice any change in his behavior ( we had stopped walking him because even the low temps here were in the upper 90s, and he was plopping himself down in the middle of walks.) we will never clip him again unless it's for medical reasons because it took forever for his hair to grow back and when it did it was pretty ugly! We have a pool and he gets in and cools off that way,(. after he lies out in the sun and 'sunbathes' LOL)I would suggest putting a paddle pool on your patio for your dog to get into. Our dog is an indoor dog. BTW that double coat keeps him warm in the winter, so much do that he still gets in the pool when it had ice on it and laid down in the snow to 'rest' after running around! Dogs don't cool down or heat up like we humans do, fact!

the Tibetan Mastiff. I used to have one, which is the parent bread of Newfies and other double-coated sheep protector dogs from Eurasia. Every April, we would sit down on the living room floor, she would lay down on a white sheet and I would begin to comb her out with a metal comb for neck and privates and a shedding rake for everywhere else. Two videos later, we could fill two paper grocery bags with down undercoat and she would be ready for summer, a much slimmer and happy dog. The same goes now for my male shepherd cross. He gets stripped down but we still have to be careful because he has a thinner topcoat and pink skin underneath. Because he is a white dog, we have to be careful of sunburn. My single coated pit/foxhound mix needs nothing but a daily going over with a shedding mitt. So all of you with double coated dogs who don't generally have to be clipped for show: Get yourself a shedding rake or furminator and save yourself some money not taking your dog to the groomer. And you and your dog will have some valuable together time.

The dogs may love it, as you say, but children love many things that are bad for them - and it's up to the adults to make he right decisions for them. The dog may be happier with less hair, but s/he doesn't know what skin cancer is or what it means to over heat. I'm not taking a side here, exactly, but if you make all of your decisions based off of what makes your pet or child happy in this moment vs. long term health and safety, I will gladly adopt your dogs and children*. * I will not actually adopt your dogs or children.

If you read the article you will see there is a difference from clipping to shaving. Clipping means short shaving means not at all. Shaving all the hair off a dog is dangerous.

With all due respect Gail you are missing the vital difference between how humans and dogs cool down. We the humans sweat and expel heat through our skin. Dogs expel heat solely through panting. So yes we would not wear a blanket to block the sun as we would heat the layer of air between our skin and the blanket and therefore could not cool down via evaporation. Dogs don't do this. How often have you seen a sweaty dog? So this is not bad advice at all.

BTW, dogs also sweat through the pads of their feet. "just through panting" is incorrect.

1. Dogs also sweat from the pads of their feet. 2. This is not a political forum so the person that referred to "global warming" please refrain from comments like that. You obviously don't have a clue how this farse got started and who benefits from jibberish like that. 3. The comment about the author and vet who wrote the article, what are your qualifications? 4. I will check into the ASPCA as best I can, but when you start talking about people's salary, I see shades of politics. See #2 above. Who cares how much they make? If they have put in the time and raised themselves to that level, more power to them. Hard work is NOT a bad thing, so how about focusing on something that really matters.

"Farse" should be spelled "Farce" and "jibberish" should be spelled "gibberish". Nobody expects you to be Hemingway, but, really, basic grammar and spelling can and should be expected of everyone. Especially when you make a point of criticizing the person who commented on global warming. Remember, if you post publicly, you invited public comment.

"invited" is past tense, so if your are to use the proper grammar it should be "invite" present tense.
