Terrified, Matted Pup Gets Happy Ending: Diamond’s Before and After

Thursday, January 10, 2013 - 12:30pm
Before and after rescued Bichon Frise

Last year in Texas, a scared little white pup named Diamond arrived at the City of Abilene’s municipal shelter. She was dirty, painfully matted and very scared. No one knew it at the time, but she was also deaf.

If Diamond had arrived at the shelter a year earlier, she may never have found her happy ending. But the folks who work at the City of Abilene shelter are especially dedicated and strongly committed to saving animals’ lives. Naturally, they jumped at the chance to take part in the ASPCA’s Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project, unveiled in September.

Part of the ASPCA Animal Relocation Initiative, the Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project helps cash-strapped municipal shelters like Abilene’s relocate dogs to off-site adoption programs, rescues or private shelters by providing municipal shelters $50 per dog placed. That money can be spent on vet care for an animal, transportation of the pet, or on anything else that will help move the animal out of the shelter.

For Diamond, this program was a godsend. Abilene was able to use the Petrie subsidy to move her to The Pawed Squad rescue. After a desperately needed grooming, Diamond revealed herself to be an adorable little Bichon Frise! She also came out of her shell and showed she would make a wonderful companion.

Soon after rescuing Diamond, the Pawed Squad was able to place her in a loving home that cherishes her every day. Her deafness was never an issue for these awesome adopters.

Congratulations to Abilene, The Pawed Squad rescue and Diamond’s happy family. We’re so glad the Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project is changing lives like hers and thousands of others.

I would love to tell you about Pretty-- she will need spaying and HW treatment-- she came out of the Miami Dade animal shelter-- and was Doggie Rescue Railroaded to NC where I'm fostering her.

Ditto !

The plants are then harvested and safety destroyed. Also included are related events including The Alp Natural and Cultural History

It was a delight to see that lovely bichon frise in her glory, cleaned up, shampooed, manicured and happy, and looking forward to her next meal. I care for my daughter's dachshund, Leo, a rescued pooch, from Dachshund Rescue, when she travels for her job, and I often visit Petsmart for his food and treats. There I meet many interesting and happy dogs who are also rescued. I recently met my first long-haired dachshund there. She was sweet and lovely, and much adored by the family that rescued her. I support my local ASPCA with money, and bags of kibble that Leo has tired of and rejected, and with clean but worn blankets and large towels that augment the bedding provided by the shelter.

I live in Covington, GA and would like to help provide "rides for dogs" - please contact me for details. thanks, Victoria

How about taking it a step higher. Flights for animals? I am an airline pilot and fly for free. I would love to transport an animal or two to loving homes albeit they are far away. Thoughts?

THANKS to all who offer to transport dogs! Have you looked into Pilots n paws? You can check out their website at pilotsnpaws.org It's a great group that does a LOT of wonderful things for dogs in need!

Thank you so much. I will look into pilots for paws. I appreciate your reply.

Small Paws Rescue at www.smallpawsrescue.org is always looking for air transport for rescues. Pilots N Paws does that, too -www.pilotsnpaws.org Contact these organizations; good luck and God Bless you for wanting to help rescue fluffs!

-www.pilotsnpaws.org What a GREAT Idea! Thank you. I had never even heard of these guys!. Take care.

God bless the gentleman that offered air transportation and everyone else for supporting ASPCA.

I just adopted a dog. And six months later he saved me back by scaring off a man trying to invade my car while I was sitting at a stop light. So just when I think all is wrong with the world I see blogs like these and it reminds me that there are still really good and caring people still out there. So God Bless everyone of you who offer your time to help animals. Riley is not only my hero but the love of my life.

And that is exactly why we do what we do! I have been an animal rescuer most of my life. It started when I was in kindergarten and would save the neighbors dogs from being picked up by the "catcher". It grew from there. Now I hear from all kinds of people when they know of an animal that needs help. I currently live with 4 dogs and 2 cats and 1 out of the 6 was not a rescue!

AMEN!!!!

I think that's a fantastic idea! The ASPCA should jump on it! Bless your heart!

the cat rescue group that I work with helps a St. Croix, virgin islands shelter by transporting cats to the Northern VA-DC area and adopting them out from our shelter("Pets from Paradise" program). The cats travel as "carry on" with volunteer passengers leaving St. Croix, and our volunteers pick the cats up from airports at the end of the flights. if any pilots (or volunteer passengers!)may travel from st. croix to Northern VA/Richmond/Baltimore, and have an interest in helping with this wonderful rescue program that has saved many sweet cats, please contact KingStreetCats.org.Please spread the word!! Thanks.

There are several programs that fly rescued animals .. I belong to a rescue group that transports animals that are being sent to a rescue group or that have alreadybeen adopted and need to reach their new homes. How nice they could be flown rather than have ro endure days riding in cars. Look for them on yahoo website X

Kristian Bassolino (Visitor) Do you do international flights? A group in Bosina might like help transporting to the UK... I'd need your data to give to them so you could communicate directly. Nelda nelda_percival@hotmail.com USA

Theres a special place in Heaven for people like you!! Im no pilot, just a nurse- but I would be thrilled to help provide transportation by way of car!

I live on the coast of NC. I am quite intrested in knowing what this program means and details for joining. Would I be able to join since I am in other state? Please sen me details. Thanks

I live in the Cleveland area and we transport dogs to the Carolinas regularly to get them out of a high kill shelter. There are many other groups that need help for dogs moving north to south and south to north. Most transports try and break down transfers so each leg is about an hour but you may do more if you would like. If you are on Facebook like Smola's animal train and Cleveland animal control volunteers for more information

there is also a group on Yahoo and Facebook that I volunteer with called 'Open Arms Pound Rescue' that are always looking for drivers from TN, KY and Ohio going north. I spend winters on the west coast of Florida, and would be interested in helping out driving animals down here as well.

St Thomas has a new Humane Society shelter there, the only one on the island and brand new. They are always full and looking for rescue groups who can take dogs from main gateways (Ameucan Ailines gateways) to animal rescuers who can help have adoptees ready. All of this is one by volunteers, and they have more people from the mainland who could adopt, visitors like me, but have to have n organization at the end of the line to facilitate these adoptions. Many of the dogs are pure bred and are either abandoned or lost. If we could somehow get pilots with these programs in touch with that shelter, it would really help, especially in the terribly hot summers. Thanks!

I did a google search for dog transports and came up with a list of them. I started transporting about 6 months ago, it's very rewarding.

This is why I support, through donation, the ASPCA. As a Bichon owner, I cannot understand mistreating any animal in this way, let alone a people loving dog like a Bichon. My Sam is the best, smartest, dog I have ever parented !!!!

what a beauty Diamond is. All dogs are "people loving" no matter what pedigree they are. Glad Diamond has a furever home. xo

You animal rescuers are soooooo AWESOME. Every creature counts!

This article brings tears to my eyes. Tears of sadness that Diamond had to live through a terrifying time, as well as tears of joy for finding a loving home. She looks very happy in her new home. Thank GOD for animal lovers. A big THANKS to the ASPCA and the Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project.

Awesome! ;) Pets should not be "put down"! They can easily be transfered to another shelter then another if necessary etc until they find their furever home. Because if not adopted in one areas shelter once transfered to another areas shelter they may het adopts there. If we just move them around they'll all fund fyrever homes. There's no need these days to just " put down" animals because they werent adopted! Transferung them shelter to shelter us easy enough. That way they're sure to find their soulmate companion(s). ;)

I agree 110%. I pray one day there will be an end to killing our furry friends. God help them all!

I also agree 100 percent. All animals are precious and this is why I am an ASPCA guardian. Thank you to all true animal lovers. I only wish I could do more.

What a wonderful organization/foundation!!! I am so happy for this precious, adorable little girl Diamond, and all the other animals that will be helped by Carroll's foundation project. Thank you Carroll!

Our family may not always be able to donate as often as we like, but are more than happy to assist with transport here in Central Florida and the surrounding areas!

Check out pet pardons they have a transport regularly from miami dade to get bullbreeds and small dogs out of the kill shelter there they are on FB

After my precious Molly died I was paying off the bills we got for her care and didn't get another dog in order to catch up ($5,000 over a two yr. period.) I'm moving to FL. soon and hope to foster dogs. Belve it or not that's one reason I'm buying a home and not buying a condo. Kuddo's to all who help. Diamond looks adorable and deserves a good life.

What a beautiful dog and a Happy Ending. God Bless her new family. Enjoy many many years together.

What a remarkable story! Keep up the good work for our beloved friends. I will keep my part in supporting these animals like Diamond. Happy to be a part of your orginazation. They need us, so I thank you guys for your commitment.

I live in so mississippi and would behappy tohelp transport..I have experience in this as I used to do rescue/transport on a regular basis

What a great ending for a precious animal. As a mother of 3 shelter dogs, I have one thing to say...SHELTER DOGS ROCK!!!!! Over the years I have adopted a total of 6 shelter dogs and 3 shelter cats and have NEVER had any problems with any of them or ever regretted taking on the task. Shelter animals really do realize how lucky they are and they are the most loving animals in the world. My Only regret is that I don't have unlimited funds to help all the shelter pets everywhere. I have learned that, even though you may not have the finances to adopt a pet, you can still be an IMMENSLEY VALUABLE ASSET by reporting animal abuse every time, by picking up strays who you might find in your yard and take just a moment to look up the number of an animal rescue group who would gladly take the animal and provide shelter and eventually find a home for it. Rescue Groups are SERIOUS and PASSIONATE about what they do and they will respond immediately to a call for help for an abandoned animal and you can feel good that you made that small effort to help an animal that is helpless to help itself. Another way you can help is to encourage everyone you know to spay or neuter their pets to prevent homeless, helpless situations for all pets. THANK GOD FOR THE ASPCA, HSUS AND ALL PET RESCUE ORGANIZATIONS EVERYWHERE, YOU WILL BE REWARDED!!!!!!

Thank you, Laura Terrett. You covered everything I've been thinking and doing over the years. So glad there are people like you (and others on this site) who care for the voiceless innocents.

The story about little Diamond and her happy ending is such a wonderful thing to read about amidst all the tragedy around. I could not agree with you more on shelter dogs and could not have said it any better.

I am grateful and thankful to see so many caring people out there taking the time to think first about how they can help and contribute in some way. Obviously, not everyone can contribute monetarily, but collectively we can all do so much. Every one of us has a talent, a gift, or yes, perhaps some money - even the smallest gift counts. Don't give up - keep up your good works and thoughts on behalf of those that cannot speak out for themselves. Dogs and cats need you, but so too do many other types of furry critters who languish in horrible conditions (fur industry, farm animals, government, pharmacutical and university laboratories). Continue to be their advocates and their heros!

Thank you to the angels who rescue these precious, voiceless victims. I live in Branford, CT and would be happy to partcipate in the rides program.

So happy for little Diamond. SHE'S BEAUTIFUL!

What a wonderful story and picture! Thanks GOD for the ASPCA and the animal lovers who help rescue them. Many happy years to you precious Diamond!

It make's me feel so happy to see happy endings like this. I give what i can,but seeing these story's I wish I could give more.

She gives a whole new meaning to "a Diamond in the Rough." What a gem she turned out to be and what gems all who work to rescue pets are!
