Puppy Thrown from Car in Sandy Aftermath Now at ASPCA

Puppy Thrown From Car

Even as their region was devastated by Superstorm Sandy, a New Jersey couple found time to step up for an animal in need.

After spending days inside waiting out the storm without electricity, Gloria Delgado and Wilfredo Garcia took their dog for a walk Tuesday to survey the damage to their Elizabeth neighborhood.

A few blocks from their home, they saw something strange: a little white car idling at the edge of a park. The couple heard a yelp and a car door slam, and then watched as the car sped away.

To their horror, Delgado and Garcia realized a Hound/Pit Bull mix puppy, white with brown spots and about five months old, had been pitched out of the car, left to fend for herself among the downed trees and debris. Delgado called to the confused puppy, and she came right away.

Delgado and Garcia waited for 20 minutes—perhaps, they thought, she fell out of the car? But the car never returned, so they took the puppy home to their dark apartment.

“She was so nice,” Delgado says. “So good and playful with our kids and our dog.”

The puppy stayed the night, but the Garcia family knew they couldn’t keep her forever. Delgado cleans houses in Manhattan, and she decided to bring us the puppy when she returned to work. On Wednesday, the entire Garcia family braved hours of traffic to ensure the dog reached us safely.

“I lived in Manhattan a long time ago, so I know how the ASPCA takes care of animals,” Garcia says. “I knew they would take care of this dog.”

We are so grateful that the Garcia family took care of this sweet and happy little puppy, who is receiving care at our Adoption Center and will be made available for adoption soon. Of course, we named her Sandy.

UPDATE: Sandy has been adopted!

Hey there, Do you folks need volunteers to help with the Sandy relief? I'm in Astoria, Queens and have all weekend to lend a hand. I would love to help out. Please let me know if I can be helpful!!!! Thanks, Erika

even though i`m only in sixth grade, i have to go out if the room when ever those commercials come on or else i will start bawling my eyes out. :(

im in sixth grade too and the same thing happens

He is right, there is nothing wrong about feeling bad about the misfortune of others, it is natural. That means that you are a great person and deep down you will help them also if you had the chance. So never be ashamed to show everyone your feelings. It makes you a better man. And for the couple who adopted the animal, you guys are great. You saved a life. I hope that good things come in your life.

http://chordsworld.com/easy-songs-on-guitar/

I either leave the room, or I try to distract myself. If I don't I end up crying because it's so sad.

i'm 31 and i still can't watch those commercials. it means you have a heart in great working order. so don't feel bad.

God Bless everyone that helps rescue these poor animals to faind a safe , loving home.

I agree with stacie God bless those who are make a diffrence in our nice states even how can people be so rude to animals what have they done to decerve they need love and attenction even if I am in 11th in high school.

God Bless Gloria Delgado and Wilfredo Garcia to help an animal in need!! The drivers/former owner of the dog should be thrown out of a moving car themselves.

Bless your hearts :))))

I agree!!! God Bless Them and the little pup! I Love Animals, and to see these hurt animals on TV makes me cry every night thinking about it. I decided to donate my 20 dollars to ASPCA.

God bless Gloria Delgado and Wilfredo Garcia. It's people like them that makes me believe in humanity. I hope sandy finds a great home and great people to love her likes she deserves to be loved.

God bless the couple for taking care of her, I wish Sandy can find a loving family soon, I am sure she will because she is so beautiful.

People really suck! How could someone do that?!?! I'd like to throw that person out of a car DURING a hurricane! So glad she's with you. I'm in DE, but I'd be happy to adopt her. I just lost my Aussie of 16yrs in August, but am ready to adopt again. I live on 2 acres of fenced in yard. e-mail me & we can start the adoption process. =)

I SO.... AGREE WITH YOU. I'M NOT TOTALLY AN "EYE FOR AN EYE"PERSON,BUT IN CASES LIKE THIS, YEAH, IF THEY CATCH THE PERSON, LET HIM/HER KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE "THROWN AWAY. i'M NOT A RELIGIOUS PERSON, BUT "BLESS YOU" FOR OPENING YOUR HOME AND YOUR HEART. YOU SOUND LIKE THE PERFECT OWNER. JUST MAKE SURE THERE AREN'T ANY HOLES IN YOUR FENCE AND THAT THE PUP GETS TO SLEEP INSIDE WITH YOU. I HATE PEOPLE WHO KEEP THEIR PETS OUTSIDE. TO ME, PETS ARE MY FAMILY. MY MOST FORGIVING MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY. I WILL ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF THEM. ALWAYS! I KNOW YOU WILL TOO!

Please tell me how I can get her out here in Washington State as I would like to adopt her.

I live on four acres outside of Spokane, Washington and would love to give Sandy a good home full of love and she would have a buddy to play with.

Thank goodness for people that go out of their way for animals in need, she is so beautiful!

Its people like those disgusting individuals who make me not like people but trust animals more.. but then stories of wonderful people surface and it makes me feel a little better. I hope she gets adopted soon! Plus, she looks like she could use a mature play pal--like Lady!

Who does that? Such a sweet face! I am in Colorado, but my Catahoula and I would adopt her in a heartbeat if there were a way to do it!

May God bless this couple for saving this beautiful puppy!! Please let me know if th. puppy comes up for adoption.

I would so take that dog into my home,it is too sad, if you don't find a home for him, I have lots of land and love for him. Worth the drive. Kathy

"After spending days inside waiting out the storm without electricity, Gloria Delgado and Wilfredo Garcia took their dog for a walk Tuesday" The storm hit NJ on Monday night. So how were they without electricty "for days"? This is a great story, sloppily told.

Really!! All you can do is see the negative in this story, which isn't even that. Who cares how long they were without power, I am sure they still are. These people had enough compassion to do some good where evil was done despite the tragedy they are expeiencing themselves.

I agree with the fact that 'some people' are more interested in counting how many days power was out, but no concern for the dog. I hope they do not have a dog because I see what their priority is. Inconsiderate!

Awww! So nice to know there are decent generous thoughtful people still! In a world of uncertainty!!

Gracias Gloria Y Wilfredo. El mundo necesita mas personas como uds. Dios les bendiga. Este perrito tuve suerte tener personas concientes alrededor. Muy bien hecho!

I've already sent a donation to the ASPCA - but anything we can do to help the couple that saved him?

Hi I just wanted to say thank you for your concerns, i am Sandys new daddy i adopted her and love her she loves her new family and i feel blessed to have gotten her,Thank you and Happy ThanksGiving!

Good job hope that she is doing better after that is she a good dog i am just curose because i have two dogs and one pit bull.

There are plenty of young pit bulls in shelters across the United States, and they need homes just as much as this one does. Anyone who says they would like to adopt this puppy (which is at the ASPCA shelter in New York City and will not be transported across the U.S. to be adopted) should visit their local shelter and take one of those dogs home instead of wanting this one just because it comes with a sad story.

unf*cking real. these people make me sick to my stomach. how heartless can you be. anyone who does something so disgusting should be charged and inprisoned. just because its an ANIMAL DOESNT MEAN ITS OKAY. let someone throw them out of a car see how they like it.

I will take this amazing dog. Please let me know. 443 682 2607

I keep hoping that people who mistreat animals will have the same treatment done to them....unfortunately, that just doesn't seem to happen....then someone like these people come along and restore my HOPE (not belief...just hope) that more people will do what they did. Kindness doesn't cost a dime....please spread it around our animals kingdom everyday!!!!

I'm sure that there is a long line of people wanting to adopt Sandy, but add me to the list. We can offer her a good home and faminky in Massachusetts.

Hi there I just seen the Good Morning America Show seen the short clip of The Pitbull mix tossed from a car. I'm interested in adopting her. I have 2 dogs now 10yr male springer and 2yr pitbull mix looks like she could be sandys twin. I live in Harrisville,RI have tons of yard space for everyone to run and play. Our Nikki (pitbull mix)we rescued from Tennessee through pooches on the move. She has been a great lovable addition to our family we would love to help and provide a wonderful life for Sandy. Thank you Melissa

I'm the only "dog person" in my family. But when my family saw this puppy, they absolutely fell in love. I know there are many people who would be more than willing to give Sandy a home, but we would love to be added to the list. There are three children who would be so glad to love her, take care of her, and play with her; and the parents are just as hopeful as the children. We can't stand to see animals treated the way Sandy was, and we would love to be the ones to keep her safe in our home in Massachusetts.

Clearly there is competition for "Sandy" but too would love to adopt her! I instantly called the ASPCA line but have gotten nowhere ...apparently the lines are still down. If she is available for adoption my husband and I would love to welcome her to our little family!

I live in Indiana and my dog of 14 years recently passed away :( I saw Sandy on Good Morning America and felt an instant connection! Would love to adopt her. Can anybody tell me how?

Would love to adopt her.

What a horrible, cold-hearted couple, throwing a helpless, defenseless little dog out of a car in the devastated area, I hope they will rot in hell. Thanks to people like the Garcia family for rescuing the poor little dog. God bless the Garcia family, and I hope Sandy will be adopted to a truly loving home soon.

God bless Delgado and Garcia! There should be more people like them in the world! The people that threw the poor little puppy out of the car should be thrown out of the car themselves!

THANK THE GREAT LORD, THAT THERE ARE SHEPPERDS AS YOU BOTH ARE HEALERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in northen MN, and would like to adopt this puppy. How?

I would love to know if this puppy has been adopted. Please send me an update.

I think what this couple did to help that little helpless puppy in such terrible conditions was wonderful! What type of person would throw an innocent, helpless dog from their car after going through the horrible storm that we had just had? I think some people are absolutely DISGUSTING!!! ALL THEY WANT IS TO BE LOVED AND GIVE LOVE, SO WHY TREAT THEM LIKE THAT? LOVE YOUR ANIMALS AND IF BY CHANCE YOU DECIDE THAT IT IS NOT RIGHT FOR YOU, GO TO A LOCAL NO-KILL SHELTER WHERE THERE WILL BE A POSSIBILITY FOR THE PUPPY TO GET ADOPTED BY A LOVING, FOREVER FAMILY. DON'T TREAT THEM LIKE TRASH. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF SOMEONE THREW YOU OUT OF A CAR? I'M SURE YOU WOULDN'T-SO WHY DO IT TO AN INNOCENT ANIMAL?

What compassionate and beautiful people you are! Good Samaratains in the truest sense of the phrase and you will be blessed ten-fold for your kindness, decency, and love. You replaced darkness with light!!! You set the good example for your children and for all of us. You showed the only way. Thank you for lifting my spirit.
