The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Black Cat

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

I adopted a black kitty from a local animal shelter and he is the sweetest cat. He fits into our family perfectly his fur is so sooft and when ever my family comes over they all want to take him home. He has a round face with greenish blue eyes and is absolutely adorable. He looks like a mini panther and i couldn't imagine not having him.

I just adopted a black cat off the street, had her spayed and called her Binky (she's bitty and inky). She has the most gorgeous big green eyes and she's a little charmer. The vet said she's only about 11 months old, and I consider myself lucky to have found her a week before Halloween! I always wanted a black cat! If I didn't live in an apartment, I would adopt more.

I have a very beautiful and lovable huge black cat. Her name is Velcro and I found her in my back yard along with two of her male siblings who are both different in color. I took her in when she was about 3 wks, old because her mother abandoned her. I bottled fed her and now she's grown into a beautiful friendly black cat who adores me. I love my velcro and never thought twice about taking her in because she is black.

I have 2 all black cats and 2 black and white cats - they are all lovable. One is called Princess and she really thinks she is a princess - she is mischivouse and thinks she is an aerialist - the high places she gets into and the distance between them amaze me.

I have 2 black cats and they are gorgeous -- Ramone (11 yrs. old) and Bela Lugosi (4 yrs. old). They cuddle with me, they cuddle with each other, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love all cats, but I've always had a fondness for black cats. Very sleek, mysterious/goofy, and beautiful. They are no different than other cats; the myths are ridiculous.

My black kitty's name is Magick and he puts the magic in my life. He is so sweet, and such a big baby. He meows that special little mew and jumps on my lap which just melts my heart. There is nothing bad or evil about having a black cat. My life would be dull and incomplete if I didn't have my soft, shiny black furred cuddle bug! Please adopt a black kitty today!

I have an all black kitty named Lilly. She is super sweet & can even play fetch. :)

love all of the black cat stories, except of course, I am horrified when people harm them. My black cat is Ripley. She is all tuxedo cat, born on 9/9/99. The only pet I've ever had for which I knew the DOB. She would've ended up at the pound. I named her Ripley for several reasons, the strong female role Sigourney Weaver played in the movie, Alien, Ripley Believe it or not, and also due to the curtain liners she "ripped" in the first few kitten months. She is awesome. Almost dog-like in how she is my shadow.... She has helped me through many sad times (my brother's death to cancer a few years ago, my father's stroke, turning 50, ha!). A true blessing. That is the story of Ripley.

I have had the blessing of being the guardian of two beautiful black cats. Coco was my first panther and that includes all that is sweet and perfect. She loved playing in boxes. I would buy a new toy and she played in the box. Then on March/2008, it was time for her to go to God. Then there was my Vinnie. I found him with 4 of his brother & sisters. Vinnie and his sister were the only ones to survive. I fed these two every 2 hours until they were about 4 weeks and we continued from there. Vinnie was a lover and he always want as much attention as was possible. His chin bagged down a little. He would look up and I would have to get hold of it, then he would look up at me with big golden eyes and purr even louder. I lost my Vinnie in May(lung cancer) of this year. I still look for him and so does his sister, Maggie. There is a very loving way that my two babies could make me so comfortable and warm. Anyone that thinks black cats are bad, they will never know the love and fun that they will missed. That my Coco and Vinnie blessed me with. They will always be in my heart and one day I will meet them at the Rainbow Bridge.

I was luck to share 19 years with a black cat named Raven. I got her as a kitten when I was still in high school. She moved to college with me and then back home. She was with me when I bought my first home and when I got married. She loved to cuddle and play. She would run around and play like a kitten right up to the end. I miss her.

Folllowing the death of our sweet 10year cat from a rare form of cancer, my husband and I went to ASPCA on Manhattan's upper east side and found a 4 month old black kitten names Jeeves by the staff. She was eating her blanket and jumping around her cage. When they took her out she had the loudest purr I had ever heard. She won our hearts and came home with us. She is a delight! She wakes my husband when the coffee goes on, plays with her toys and even made friends with our 5 month old granddaughter. She gets me if the baby cries. She's sweet, funny and a wonderful addition to our family. She's also beautiful with a sweet face to match her personality.

black cats are the ost loving yet playful felines you could ever get... my mom has one and hes just a ball of energy.... so if ur looking for a good quality cat i would go for the black kind :)

Black cats are amazing and loving. I have had 2 black cats in the past. One was named Monkey because as a baby he would jump on everything. The one thing he did the most was jump from my arms to a nearby landing area, whether the floor, bed, table, car, or anything. The name Monkey suited him perfectly. He was my lil Monkey. Now my other cat was named Willy. His tail was always up and right at the tip of his tail it would do a flip.over and stay that way. It felt as if his bone was just formed that way in his tail. It was never straight since the first day he was born. I named him Willy after Free Willy the movie. That wale had a curved fin the same as my cat had a curled tail. I could spot him anywhere. He was adorable. Those were my two babies that I miss dearly.

I have one little black girl who is named Lunalesca (Luna) and she is just the most amazing sweetheart. She was found in a colony of cats starving to death and blinded by conjunctivitis and I raised her and nursed her back to health and she is the most loving and sweet cat. Sadly, she has a congenital defect that has given her a deformed nasal passage and extra vertebrae, so she isn't going to have the longest life. But she is the cutest little lovebug ever! She was feral at 8 weeks, and she has been friendly from the start (: I have had her a year, and it has been rough but I will never stop fighting for her (: I always tell people having a black cat is actually considered good luck. I hope that one day we won't have to worry about their safety and finding them good loving homes.

I grew up with black cats around the house and they have always been the most affectionate to me. My husband and I recently adopted a sweet adorable black cat and she is a non-stop ball of energy and love! When we walked into the shelter, she was the first cat to pick me and my husband as her new owners and she was really the only one to accept us on the spot, in fact my husband wants ANOTHER black cat to go with our first baby!!! They're a ball of fun and love, but only when THEY pick YOU and not the other way around!

I've had the pleasure of being owned by several black cats over my lifetime...all have been awesome pets and oh, so beautiful! I do however, try to keep them inside around Halloween, just in case. Last year, my husband made the statement that he might consider having a cat. My response was that, if we had one, I would like to have a solid black one. About a week later, a tornado hit Chickasha in the early afternoon. Fortunately for us, we live on the other side of town from where the damage happened. Later on that evening, we heard a commotion on our front porch. When I opened the screen door, I saw a black streak come in the door, making about three circles around the living room before slowing down. To my surprise, I saw a beautiful, very freaked out black kitten trying to find a place to light. We fed her and gave her a chance to chill out. When she acted like she wanted out again, we let her out....but she came back and has been living with us since then. She doesn't really like to be petted a lot but that's OK with me since I have inside dogs. They decided to carry on a respectful relationship with each other and she is litter box trained. She pretty much comes and goes as she pleases. She now has a male kitten who is all black except for a small tip of white on the end of his tail. She has taught him to hunt for grasshoppers and other bugs for entertainment. They are both so very beautiful to see sitting side by side in the green grass. By the way, her name is Kiki and his is Tippy. There are some feral cats in the neighborhood and they all get along well. Too well...I accessed this site because I've been told that some lady is kind enough to come pick up pets and take them to Norman to have them spayed or neutered and bring them back home. Have you heard of this person, or how I might reach her? I am disabled and don't have the money to pay for it or even gas to get to Norman. I had very good luck with finding homes for Tippy's brothers and sisters...maybe not so lucky next time. Hope you can help. Just wanted to tell you the story of the cat that the tornado blew in! Wish she could tell me about her ride!!

I have a all black cat with yellow eyes that showed up skinny and sick 6 years ago.. I named him Beauty because I could see that beyond the sickness he was a beaut!! He really is the nicest cat.. loveable..comes when called and seems to know he is a Lucky Cat more than anything else because we love him so much. Funny because years ago if given a chose to what color cat I would want... yes.. black would have been last on the list but Beauty has showed me there is so much more to a cat than the color. He is a blessing to me.

I adopted two black kittens, a boy and a girl, in June of this year. They are seriously the best cats I've ever had! They are so sweet and funny and affectionate!

Katrina, my black cat, lived for 21 years. She was loved so much by all of us and she loved us all in return. Katrina came to live with us when she was just a tiny kitten and we have all missed her since her passing over 4 years ago. Katrina grew up with her human brothers and sister never realizing she wasn't one of them (human, that is). I believe black cats are special and look forward to finding "the one" that will be part of our family again.

I love my guys and I was glad to have adopted two cats instead of one after I lost my first tuxedo cat who got trapped under a Terminix tent that was hard for him to get out of. When I first saw them at the shelter, I did what I had to so no one else could adopt them the next day. They are my pride and joy for as long as I live.

At one time we had three black cats in our household. My mother was the first to rescue Mr. Salem. He is a hemingway cat, meaning he has extra toes, making him a very special little man. When I moved out of my parents house I was very lonely and decided to adopt a cat. I ended up with two brothers named Leo and Noah. Both black as well. We lost Leo a couple months ago due to a car accident and since then i've moved back home allowing Noah and Salem to become best friends. They have brought me and my family loving purrs, soft pets and so much love. So, if your unsure about opening your home to a black cat, whatever your reservations, on behalf of my family I'd like to encourage you to go for it. You will not regret your discussions. From our three black panthers to yours. Good luck and happy adopting!

My little black Jagger boy is the best kitty in the world and he is such a boy and I love him soooooo much. I also taught him to play fetch and he knows when my car pulls in and he greets me at my door everytime. I always give him elebenty kisses every day, and he loves it.

I adoptea black cat from our local humane society 13 years ago. She is still going strong. The stigma attatched to black cats and the people who believe them are absolutely ridiculous! It's kind of like saying stay away from that child they have blue eyes they are bad luck. So in turn if you wanted to adopt a child would you decide not to adopt a child with blue eyes?

Thank you for writing this! I went to my local Humane Society today and made a donation. I took some time to play with the kitties and couldn't believe how many black kittens and cats there were. I spent time with lots of cats and all the black cats were so sweet. I have a calico and a tabby at home, but if I'm ever to adopt again, I will save a place in my home for a black kitty.

i have a kitty named sparky we just adopted her yesterday black cats are a little shy on the first few days but they get much more comfortable a week or 5 days later and black cats love to hide well at least mine does.but to interact with black cats the best way in my opinion is to get a red laser dot. all cats love trying to get the dot so if you are looking into adopting a black cat please do so black cats are awesome!

In the past decade, we have owned TWO little black kitties. The first one was a rescue from a local shelter. She took about a year to come out of her shell (due to the fact that she was abused), but our Leah was one of the most snuggly, sweet-hearted cats I have ever known. She loved to sit on her humans (especially when we were upset or sad), stare out the window at our birdfeeders, but her favorite spot was on the top of our entertainment unit - the little sentinel would lord over the entire living room! Her loss two years ago to age was a terrible blow to our family. Our second one is an adoption from a family friend whose cat "accidentally" got pregnant (she is now FIXED). Prissy is almost the opposite of Leah when it comes to cuddles - Leah always wanted them, Prissy decides when on HER terms. However, she is always playful, alert, and when she does cuddle, is one of the best. She has quickly become close friends with our large black dog, which we honestly did not see coming. I guess you really can't predict who your friends will be! I would never, ever hesitate to adopt a black cat - we've had all colors, shapes, and sizes of cats through my lifetime, but the ones who have stolen our hearts the most completely have been our black cats.

By far the sweetest, most clean, intelligent and personable cat I every adopted is my all black (coat, whiskers, nose and paws), jade-eyed Xochi. She's a beauty! You will be so glad if you adopt a black kitten. No white hairs on your black clothes, and they tolerate children well.

Hazel - all black with Hazel eyes - is my 6th cat. She is also my first black cat. She is also my absolute favorite cat yet. Sweet, loving, playful, long, silky fur (my first non short-hair) and a great personality. Mellow and curious. My next cat will be black too if one is available and has a good personality. The black hair shows up on my carpet, but not on my pants. Works for me!

My little black kitty was a stray. I am so glad that I found him or he found me because he is the sweetest, most friendliest, and softest cat ever. I love all of my kitties but he's different, he's never mean or picks on the other two like they do to him. He's so loving and loves to snuggle! My chihauhua/shihtzu will only play and wrestle with him. I call him my little black panther :) he loves to talk, say hello, and sing too. Our house wouldn't be he same without Jake!

Today we adopted a 7 week old black kitten. We already have 2 adult ragdoll cats and 2 small dogs. We wanted to make she he was out going enough to handle his new environment. He has been a complete love!! He's not overly shy and seeks interaction from the others. He is very sweet and fits in very well. There have been minor issues that time will work out and we will be one big happy family.

I got my black kitten about 9 months ago from the spca and he is truly the love of my life. He cuddles with me everynight, hes so smart and hardly sheds at all. He is by far the best decision i have made in my entire life.
